External respiration is the exchange of gases between the atmosphere and the blood. It brings supplies for internal respiration by securing oxygen and disposing carbon dioxide.

Internal respiration is the exchange of gases between the blood and the cells of the body. It supplies oxygen to the cells and removes their gaseous waste.
