The bacteria that require oxygen for their growth are called Aerobic bacteria. They cannot carry out substantial fermentation.

Examples: Pseudomonas, Mycobacterium, Nitrosomonas, Nitrobacter

The bacteria that do not require oxygen to obtain energy and grow are called Anaerobic bacteria. The presence of oxygen is toxic to them.

Examples: Peptococcus, Methanobacterium
