The chemiosmotic synthesis of ATP by mitochondria is called as oxidative phosphorylation. The respiratory electron-transport complex pumps the protons from the mitochondrial matrix into the inter membrane space which create a proton gradient. This proton gradient produces a potential energy which is used up by the ATP synthase during oxidative phosphorylation.
