During photosynthesis accessory pigment molecules absorb light energy. The energy which is absorbed by the accessory pigment is transferred to the chlorophyll a. It also protects the chlorophyll molecules from the photo oxidation.  Chl b, xanthophyll and carotenoids are the accessory pigments. It also helps by making a wider range of wavelength of light to be used up for photosynthesis.
