The protein present in the body of plants and animals are broken down into ammonia by decomposers. This process of conversion is termed as the ammonification. By enzymatic activity the decomposers reduces the dead organic matter into inorganic constituents. Decomposers can return the minerals to the environment and it also allows the re-cycling of essential elements between organisms and the environment.
