DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EPIDERMIS AND PERIDERM

Epidermis

Periderm

The tissue is usually single layered

It is the multi-layered tissue formed by replacing the epidermis during the secondary growth of stems and roots

The cells are living and packed closely without intercellular spaces

The cells of peridermal tissues may be living (phelloderm) or dead (phellem)

The cells have cutinized outer walls

The cells of the phellem are suberinised and possess tannins

In aerial parts, the epidermis bears stomata for gaseous exchange

Phellem bears lenticels for exchange of gases
