The diagnostic features of green algae are;

  1. Green algae may be of different forms like unicellular, multicellular, colonial or coenocytic.
  2. It contains cellulosic cell wall and membrane bound chloroplast.
  3. The main photosynthetic pigments are Chlorophyll a, Chlorophyll b, Carotenes and Xanthophyll.
  4. The presence of protein bodies surrounding starch which is known as pyrenoids are present.
  5. Food stored in the form of starch.
  6. The asexual reproduction occurs by formation of different spores like Zoospore, Aplanospores, Hypnospores and Akinetes.
  7. The sexual reproduction occurs by isogamy, anisogamy and oogamy.
