After recombinant DNA is formed by joining desirable gene with plasmid, it has to be transferred to suitable host cells for getting multiple copies of it. Since probability of transformation is low it is necessary to have some additional phenotypic trait in plasmid which helps in identification of recombinant cells. This additional trait is acquired by antibiotic resistance gene on vector DNA, i.e. Plasmid.
