The cotyledons and the endosperm give nourishment to the young developing embryo. During the process of germination the cotyledons of the monocot never emerges above the ground.

In the dicot the cotyledons not only nourishes the developing embryo and it also become green in colour and take over the process of synthesis of food that is photosynthesis until they are dropped.
