The sporophyte is the diploid phase of the life cycle of the plant body. It is the spore bearing phase which is also known as the asexual phase in the life cycle. The haploid spores later give rise to the gametophyte. In algae the sporophytic phase is confined to the zygote only. In Bryophytes the sporophyte is a complex structure which is depending upon the gametophytic plant body. Whereas in Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms the sporophyte is the dominant phase in is life cycle.
