The transverse section of the trunks of woody plants shows two regions. That is the central dark region and the outer lightly coloured region. The dark coloured region is called heart wood and the light coloured region is called the sap wood. Since heart wood is dead cells which are heavily impregnated with resins and phenolic compounds they appear as dark in colour.
