Oogenesis produces mature egg cells or ova. We may say the process of formation of a mature female gamete is called oogenesis.

Ovaries are responsible for oogenesis. It happens in the primordial germ cell of the ovary.

Oogenesis produces one egg cell and three polar bodies by meiosis.

Passes through stages of primary oogonia, primary oocyte and secondary oocyte.

The chromosome number is reduced from 46 to 23.

Thus the final product, namely the ovum is a haploid female reproductive cell.
