The main aim of mutation breeding is to bring about the crop improvement. Some of the applications for the improvement programmes are:

  1. The mutation breeding is used for improving the oligogenic and polygenic characters.
  2. By mutation the morphological, physiological, disease resistance, yield etc. can be improved.
  3. This can induce the desirable mutant alleles.
  4. By mutation specific characteristics of the clones can be improved without changing the genetic character.
  5. The improvement of the quantitative character of crops can be brought about by the mutation breeding programmes.
  6. Desirable mutant alleles can be produced which are not present in the germplasm.
