Yes that's true. The requirement of meiosis is to halve the no. of chromosome which in turn maintains the ploidy of the body when there is zygote formation. Had there not be any sort of meiosis like thing then in sexual reproduction the no. of chromosome would get double every time whenever their will be fertilization.
Meiosis only happens to the cells which are diploid and makes them haploid.
Take a note that sperm and ova are haploid and fuse to make a zygote which is diploid and this zygote when grows into an adult then he/she also produces gamete which are haploid... and then again diploid body formation. So meiosis only maintains the no. of chromosome. There is no need of meiosis if the chromosomes are already ready to pair with other one.
