A transgenic organism is a genetically modified organism that carries a foreign DNA (transgene). These are genetically engineered organisms with new heritable characters. Hence, it differs from the rest of its population in having one or more extra genes apart from the normal gene pool of that population.
Some of the examples of transgenic organisms are:
-
Transgenic Mouse: Gene for Human growth hormone, Immunoglobulins and Urokinase
-
Transgenic Sheep and Goats: Carries genes for production of Antitrypsin (used in treatment of emphysema), tissue plasminogen activator (used to dissolve blood clots)
