Waxes are esters of high molecular weight fatty acids with alcohols (except glycerol). They are found in animal tissues. They are highly insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents like alcohol. They are chemically inert.
Some examples of waxes are:
-
Waxes serve as protective coatings on leaves and fruits
-
Bee wax is secreted by honey bee
-
Waxes serve as water barriers in birds, insects and furred animals
-
The epidermis in some animals secrets waxes to reduce water loss
