Blood doping causes increase in RBC count in the body. RBC contains hemoglobin which carries oxygen to all the cells of the body. At cellular level this oxygen is released by RBC and is taken up by the cells. Now inside the cell, in mitochondria final process of energy formation takes place with the help of oxygen. Thus increase in oxygen concentration at cellular lever causes more amount of energy to be generated in the muscles and thus increase the work capacity of the athlete. It also has a negative effect. When the viscosity of blood increases, the blood flow to peripheral cells decreases thus increases the chances of cell death.
