Bronchogenic carcinoma is the most common primary malignant tumor. While the term bronchogenic carcinoma is usually used for the lungs cancer, it take account of carcinomas having bronchial as well as bronchiolar origin.

Cause/etiology - Smoking, atmospheric pollution, occupational causes, dietary factors (susceptibility to respiratory cancers is increased in vitamin A deficiency), genetic factors and chronic scarring (from chronic inflammatory changes, old tuberculosis, asbestosis, interstitial fibrosis, old infarcts and in scleroderma).

Symptoms

  • The most common symptoms are- cough, chest pain, dyspnoea and haemoptysis. 
  • Bronchial obstructive symptoms- occlusion of the bronchus may result in bronchopneumonia, lung abscess, and bronchiectasis.
