The type of xylem in which protoxylem (first made xylem) lies towards the inside of the metaxylem (later formed xylem) is called the endarch xylem.

The position of protoxylem with respect to the metaxylem will determine the type of the xylem. In endarch xylem the protoxylem points towards centre and metaxylem points towards the periphery.
