ROLE OF ENZYMES IN METABOLISM:

  1. Metabolism is the sum totals of all the living processes which take place in the body.
  2. The metabolic pathways are directed by enzymes.
  3. Enzymes act as catalysts.
  4. They are highly specialized organic catalysts produced by living cells.
  5. Biochemical pathways refer to the reactions occurring inside the cells in sequences.
  6. Enzymes give proper direction to the biochemical pathways.
  7. They have active sites.
  8. A particular enzyme interacts with the substrate.
  9. The substrate binds to the active site of the enzyme to form the enzyme-substrate complex.
  10. The product of the reaction is released which makes the enzyme free to bind to the other substrate.

Example:

Enzyme Sucrase will act only on sucrose to produce glucose and fructose.

Sucrase would be non-functional on other disaccharides such as maltose.
