1. It is the firstly formed phloem.

1. It is the later formed phloem.

2. The elements of protophloem are slender and elongated.

2. The elements are wide, long and conspicuous.

3. It is subjected to stress due to elongation.

3. Metaphleom elements are not subjected to elongation.

4. Companion cells are rare or mostly absent.
