Antibiotic resistance genes are present in plasmid. These genes provide resistance to bacteria against certain antibiotics. There may be one or more such genes in single plasmid. Antibiotic resistance gene gives additional phenotypic trait to recombinant DNA in order to select recombinant cells. Thus these genes function as selectable marker.
