Medical treatment of AIDS comprises of
antiviral therapy
against the HIV virus and
immune-stimulative therapy
which boost the number of disease resistant cells in the body.
The groups of drugs include p
rotease inhibitors, reverse transcriptase inhibitors
and
DNA synthesis inhibitors
.
The drug
Azithmidine or Zidovudine
binds to reverse transcriptase enzyme and prolongs life.
Ribovirin, Nevirapine and Lamivudine
are the other drugs used.
