The volvox is autotrophic since in the vegetative colony all the cells are concerned with the photosynthesis. The cell possesses large cup shaped chloroplast. The chloroplast has chlorophyll a, b, xanthophyll and carotene pigment. It also has single pyrenoids where starch is the reserve food material stored around the pyrenoids.
