The gas vacuoles are small hollow cylindrical structures composed of small proteins subunits.
They are impermeable to water but freely permeable to atmospheric gases.
They play an important role in regulating the buoyancy of the cell so as to enable them to float at the depth necessary for proper light intensity, oxygen concentration and nutrients available.
