The gametophytic phase is concerned with the production of the gametes. The cells of the gametophyte are haploid (n). The haploid spore is the first cell of gametophytic generation. These spores on germination give rise to the haploid gametophytic plant body. It develops sex organs which are also haploid. That male sex organ antheridium which produces antherozoids and female sex organ archegonium produces the non-motile egg. The male and female gametes fuse to form the zygote where the gametophytic phase ends and the diploid sporophytic phase begins.
