The apical bud of the growing apex of the main stem suppresses the growth of the lateral buds; this phenomenon is known as the apical dominance. The hormone present in the apex suppresses the growth of the lateral branches. In order to get a bushy habit to the plant its apical bud has to be removed so that it encourages the growth of the lateral buds.
