The algal blooms have detrimental effects on the lakes. The algal reduces the Dissolved Oxygen (DO) from the lake thus affecting the other aquatic animals including small invertebrates and fishes. Also some algae such as Dinoflagellates, Cyanobacteria release potent neurotoxins and cytotoxins that damage the nervous system of living creatures. Ultimately, this affects the human beings through the food chain. They also produce foul smell.
