A pit is a structure that is found in non living cells like tracheids and fibres. In plants, the secondary cell wall contains depressions or cavities that are called Pits.

The type of pit in which the secondary cell wall projects over the cavity of the pit enclosing a pit membrane which opens towards the outside through a pit aperture is called as Bordered pit. The pits help in the passage of substances from one cell to another.
