The main aim of the plant breeding is to improve the characteristics of the plants so as to make the plant high yielding, disease resistant etc. Some of the objectives are:

  1. High yielding is the first and foremost of all concerns. Most of the programmes aim at bringing the higher yield, the plant becomes hybrid.
  2. Improvement in the Quality of the yield is another character that a crop plant should possess.
  3. Plant should be disease resistant.
  4. Should possess good agronomic characters such as the increase in the yield of grain and fruits, plant height in case of sugar cane etc.
  5. The shortening in the life cycle helps in the cultivation of the crops twice in a year.
  6. The crops should possess the quality of synchronous maturity.
  7. Dormancy of the seed is also important as there are chances of rain during the harvesting season.
  8. The toxic substances present in certain crops should be eliminated so as to make it useful for consumption.
  9. Developments of new varieties of plants that are resistant to the stress and salt condition have to be developed for the rain fed and saline areas.
  10. New crops must possess wider adaptability.
  11. Development of new varieties of crops which are photo and thermo insensitive so that they can be cultivated in the new areas.
