What is survival of the fittest?

  1. The process by which the best adapted organisms are preferred by nature out of a heterogeneous population is called Natural Selection.
  2. In the struggle for existence in nature, individuals with favourable variations may have competitive advantage over the others.
  3. Hence, they will survive in greater numbers and produce proportionally more number of off-springs.
  4. Due to this, nature will not preserve the individuals with unfavourable variations.
  5. These individuals with unfavourable variations will automatically be outnumbered and eliminated.
  6. This is called as ‘The Survival of the Fittest’.
  7. Thus, nature selects the fittest to survive.
