The primitive cultivars and the wild varieties are altogether form the gene pool. They are important asset for the future breeding programmes. The primitive forms are replaced by the new cultivars so that narrowing of the genetic diversity occurs. The gene available for the breeding programmes will become irreplaceable. The establishment of the gene bank is only method to overcome this and conserve the germplasm. The modern tissue culture technique helps in the storage of germplasm as it eliminates disease and clonal multiplication possible.
