Shrinking of the protoplasm due to loss of water by osmosis is known as the plasmolysis. It occurs when the amount of water molecules is high in the cell than the outside; the movement of water molecules occurs resulting in the shrinkage of the protoplasm from the cell wall. The process of plasmolysis can be reversed by placing the cell in a hypotonic solution, so that the water enters the cell resulting in the normal size of the protoplasm. This reversal process of plasmolysis is known as the deplasmolysis.
