Pollution can be classified on the basis of medium and pollutants.

(a) Pollution can be broadly classified into two types such as:

  1. Natural pollution: Caused due to natural activities. e.g. Cyclones, Dust storms, Earthquakes, floods, etc.
  2. Artificial pollution: Caused by man. e.g. Industrialization, deforestation, excessive use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers, etc.

(b) Based on the medium, pollution can be classified as:

  1. Air pollution
  2. Water pollution
  3. Soil pollution
  4. Noise pollution

(c) On the basis of pollutants, pollution are of the following types:

  1. Gaseous pollution (SO2, CO2, etc.)
  2. Lead pollution
  3. Mercury pollution
  4. Nutrient pollution
