Position: It is the anterior part of the pituitary gland.
Parts:
- It is made up of three parts - Pars tuberalis, Pars distalis and Pars intermedia (intermediate lobe).
- The Pars distalis and Pars tuberalis are together called as anterior lobe of the pituitary.
- Anterior lobe along with intermediate lobe forms the adenohypophysis.
- It is intimately connected with the hypothalamus by a portal system of blood vessels called as hypothalamus-hypophyseal portal system.
Embryological development: It arises from the oral ectoderm as a glandular pouch called Rathke’s pouch.
