The uptake of water and nutrients from the soil via the roots is through another process known as OSMOSIS. Not to be confused with DIFFUSION.

Osmosis: The net movement of water molecules from a region of higher water potential (eg. a dilute solution) to a region of lower water potential (eg. a concentrated solution) through a partially permeable membrane.

Diffusion: The net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration down or along a concentration gradient as a result of their random movement,
