The following is the comparison between systolic and diastolic blood pressure:

Systolic Blood Pressure

Diastolic Blood Pressure

Origin

The Word “Systolic” came from the Greek word, meaning “drawing together or the contraction”.

The Word “Diastolic” came from the Greek word meaning, “drawing apart”.

Definition

Systolic Blood Pressure is defined as the pressure exerted by the blood on the walls of the arteries when the heart Beats.

Diastolic Blood Pressure is defined as the pressure exerted by the blood on walls of the arteries when the heart is in relaxed state.

Normal Range

For Adults: 90-120mmHg

For Children’s (of 6-9years of age): 100mmHg

For Infants: 95mmHg

For Adults: 60-80mmHg

For Children’s (of 6-9years of age): 65mmHg

For Infants: 65mmHg

Unit of Measurement

Millimeter of Mercury (mmHg)

Millimeter of Mercury (mmHg)

Representation

Systolic blood pressure represents the maximum pressure exerted by the blood on the walls of the arteries.

Diastolic blood pressure represents the minimum pressure exerted by the blood on the walls of the arteries.

Importance

It is very important to measure the Systolic Blood pressure in the aged people, as it causes lot of other disease and the infarct also.

It is very important to measure the Diastolic pressure in the younger Individual.

Type of Disease

It can be a chronic condition.

It is always an acute emergency when diastolic blood pressure decreases below 50-45mmHg

State of Ventricles

Contraction in the Left Ventricles.

Ventricles are filled with blood in the diastolic phase.

State of Blood Vessels

Blood Vessels are Contracted.

Blood Vessels are Relaxed.

Who to Read

The Highest Reading from where the sound starts is the Systolic Blood Pressure.

The Lowest Reading from where the sound stops is Diastolic Blood Pressure.

Phase

It is a Contraction phase.

It is a Relaxation phase.

Systole – It is the rhythmic contraction of the heart (ventricles) during which blood is pumped out in aorta and pulmonary artery.

Diastole – It is the rhythmic relaxation of the heart (ventricles) or the refilling of the ventricles.

Systolic pressure – It the maximum pressure exerted against the walls of the arteries during the contraction of the heart. It derived from the Greek word which means drawing together.

Diastolic pressure – It is the minimum pressure exerted against the walls of the arteries during the relaxation of the heart (ventricles) or the refilling of the ventricles. It derived from the Greek word which means drawing apart.
