  1. Stem tuber is the underground modification of stem for storage of food, perennation and vegetative propagation.
  2. It is the swollen end of a special underground branch.
  3. This underground branch arises from the axil of a lower leaf and is swollen due to storage of food material.
  4. There are many eyes or buds on the surface of the tuber. In potato, the eyes are axillary buds subtended by scale leaves.
  5. On sowing, each bud is capable of developing into a new plant.
