EXTERNAL FERTILISATION IN ORGANISMS

  1. The fertilization which takes place outside the body of the organism is called external fertilization.
  2. It is commonly seen in various vertebrates and chordates, aquatic animals such as frog, Labeo, Neris, and Obelia.
  3. Parents release sperms and eggs in the surrounding water, where fertilization occurs and zygotes develop into an offspring.
  4. For external fertilization to be successful, the male and female must release their gametes at the same time, place and in large numbers.
  5. The parents may or may not make physical contact for releasing the gametes.
