EXTERNAL FERTILISATION IN ORGANISMS
-
The fertilization which takes place outside the body of the organism is called external fertilization.
-
It is commonly seen in various vertebrates and chordates, aquatic animals such as frog, Labeo, Neris, and Obelia.
-
Parents release sperms and eggs in the surrounding water, where fertilization occurs and zygotes develop into an offspring.
-
For external fertilization to be successful, the male and female must release their gametes at the same time, place and in large numbers.
-
The parents may or may not make physical contact for releasing the gametes.
