Lichens are very sensitive to air pollution, particularly to higher concentration of Sulfur Dioxide(SO2) in the atmosphere. Sulfur Dioxide causes plasmolysis of algal cells and converts chlorophyll of algae into phaeophytin by removing Mg. Phaeophytin results in chlorosis and death of the lichen.
