Plasmid DNA is the extra-chromosomal DNA in the bacterial cell. Plasmids are double stranded and mostly circular. All plasmid contains origin of replication and hence they are able to multiply by themselves independently of the chromosomal DNA. Plasmids are of different sizes, forms and characteristics. Generally, they are not essential for the survival of the bacterial cell. They are transferable from one cell to another.
