The main functions of the integuments are:

  1. The integuments surround the nucellus (sporophytic tissue) except at the micropylar region there by protecting it.
  2. The integument near the micropyle in the Castor divides and forms the Caruncle. The caruncle is considered as the third integument.
  3. The inner integument becomes specialized to form the endothelium. Endothelium gives nourishment to the embryo sac.
  4. The integument develops into seed coat.
  5. The seed coats also protect the seed and the embryo present inside it.
