The main functions of the integuments are:
-
The integuments surround the nucellus (sporophytic tissue) except at the micropylar region there by protecting it.
-
The integument near the micropyle in the Castor divides and forms the Caruncle. The caruncle is considered as the third integument.
-
The inner integument becomes specialized to form the endothelium. Endothelium gives nourishment to the embryo sac.
-
The integument develops into seed coat.
-
The seed coats also protect the seed and the embryo present inside it.
