Pollution caused due to release of large amounts of heated water (effluents) into the water bodies is called thermal pollution.
Thermal power plants, refineries and other industries discharge hot water into the nearby water bodies such as lakes, sea, etc.
This leads to a sudden rise in temperature, thereby affecting the aquatic life in the water bodies.
