The vital reactions involved in the formation of the nucleic acids, carbohydrates, amino acids and proteins are similar in all organisms. The reactions involved in these processes are termed as the basic or primary metabolism. In addition to the reactions of primary metabolism there are some reactions which are not vital and these reactions are termed as the secondary metabolism. The products which are formed are called as the secondary metabolites.
