The structure that develops from the ruptured follicle in the ovary after ovulation.
It secretes sex hormones progesterone and some estrogen.
During the luteal phase of the ovarian cycle, It is the luteinizing hormone (LH) that stimulates the corpus luteum to produce progesterone.
The placenta produces a hormone
human chorionic gonadotropin
, that maintains the corpus luteum in the ovary during pregnancy.
If pregnancy doesn’t occur, the corpus luteum regresses consequently a new cycle begins with menstruation.
