• It secretes sex hormones progesterone and some estrogen.
• During the luteal phase of the ovarian cycle, It is the luteinizing hormone (LH) that stimulates the corpus luteum to produce progesterone.
• The placenta produces a hormone human chorionic gonadotropin , that maintains the corpus luteum in the ovary during pregnancy.
• If pregnancy doesn’t occur, the corpus luteum regresses consequently a new cycle begins with menstruation.
