Carotenoids are of two types viz. carotenes and xanthophylls.

Major carotene found in plant cells is blue-green ß-carotene(beta carotene). Carotene have general molecular formula C40H56.

Xanthophylls are the oxygenated derivatives of carotene and are yellow in colour. They have molecular formula C40H56O2.enlightened
