Distribution of lichens:

  1. Lichens are one of the most widely distributed groups of plants.
  2. They are found in the regions from far north to far south.
  3. They are also seen in the equatorial jungles.
  4. Lichens grow on rocks, tree bark, fences, roof, water and other substrates generally unsuitable for the growth of other plants.
  5. Verrucaria is marine lichen which forms a distinct black band above the high tide mark.
  6. Many lichens are able to grow at low temperatures found at high altitudes and in polar environments.
  7. Reindeer mosses are lichens which are widely distributed in the Arctic regions.
  8. In India, they are found all over the Himalayas.
  9. They are also seen in the higher hills of Peninsular India.
  10. Plenty of lichens with beautiful colours are found in Darjeeling and Sikkim.
