All the algae possess the chlorophyll a. whereas the chlorophyll b is found in Chlorophyta, Euglenophyta and Charophyta. The presence of chlorophyll c is found in Bacillariophyta, Pyrrophyta and Phaeophyta. The presence of chlorophyll d is noticed only in red algae and chlorophyll e in Xanthphyta. The thallus of green algae appears green due to the presence of two pigments chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b. These pigments constitute the dominant pigments in the Chlorophyta, Charophyta, Euglenophyta. The chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b containing plastids are called chloroplasts.
